Usable battery capacity

The amount of energy the system allows to be used from the battery within its operating limits.

Reviewed 05.10.2026 · Version 3 · Scope: General

How to interpret it

It is distinct from gross capacity, which describes the pack’s total nominal energy. To compare vehicles, equivalent figures should be used, while retaining how each manufacturer identifies them.

Example

A hypothetical battery may be listed as 60 kWh gross and 55 kWh usable; using the two figures interchangeably changes a range calculation.

Why it matters to you

It helps compare batteries and choose the appropriate figure for estimating available energy.

Common points of confusion

Usable capacity is not charging power or range. The figure should be read with its version and definition, without assuming it always matches gross capacity.
