Kilowatt-hour (kWh)

A unit of energy corresponding to maintaining a power of one kilowatt for one hour.

Reviewed 05.10.2026 · Version 3 · Scope: General

How to interpret it

In an electric vehicle, it can express stored or consumed energy. When interpreting a figure, distinguish the battery, the energy measured by the meter, and the losses between those two points.

Example

In an ideal example, a constant power of 3 kW for two hours represents 6 kWh of energy.

Why it matters to you

It helps compare energy consumption and capacity, and calculate costs when the price is expressed per unit of energy.

Common points of confusion

It is not a unit of power and is not equivalent to distance in kilometres. Two vehicles with the same available energy may travel different distances.
