Metric horsepower (CV/PS)

A metric unit of power equal to approximately 735.5 watts.

Reviewed 05.10.2026 · Version 3 · Scope: General

How to interpret it

In Spanish specifications, it appears alongside kW to describe power. The conversion must preserve the type of horsepower used, because Anglo-American mechanical horsepower has a different equivalent.

Example

A hypothetical 100 CV engine is equivalent to approximately 73.55 kW; the calculation converts units, it does not estimate performance.

Why it matters to you

It makes it possible to compare specifications that express the same quantity in different units and to identify incorrect conversions.

Common points of confusion

CV is not the same unit as mechanical hp. PS denotes metric horsepower; a translation must not change the quantity.
