Kilowatt (kW)

A unit of power equal to one thousand watts. It expresses the rate at which energy is transferred or transformed.

Reviewed 05.10.2026 · Version 2 · Scope: General

How to interpret it

A specification may use it to indicate the power of an engine or of a charger. These are different applications of the same unit: comparing the two figures alone does not describe the vehicle’s range.

Example

If a hypothetical charger delivers a constant 2 kW for one hour, it will have transferred 2 kWh before accounting for losses.

Why it matters to you

It makes it possible to interpret power using a common unit and to distinguish the rate of energy transfer from the amount of energy.

Common points of confusion

kW expresses power; kWh expresses energy. An advertised maximum power does not mean that power is maintained throughout the entire charge.
