Mass in running order

Mass in running order describes the mass of a vehicle prepared for driving, including the items specified by the applicable definition. It is not necessarily the same as its unladen mass or a particular measured mass.

Reviewed 05.10.2026 · Version 2 · Scope: España

How to interpret it

The documentation determines how fluids, fuel, tools, and the driver are counted. In Spain, the General Vehicle Regulations include a conventional driver of 75 kg in the relevant definition; this reference should not be generalized to all markets or vehicles.

Example

Hypothetical example: adding accessories after type approval can increase the actual mass and reduce the payload margin even if the original figure in the documentation does not change.

Why it matters to you

It helps establish the starting point for payload calculations and compare figures that are equivalent only when they use the same definition.

Common points of confusion

Tare, mass in running order, and maximum authorized mass describe different concepts. Commercial language may use “weight,” but specifications express mass in kg.
