Payload is the mass available for occupants and cargo within the vehicle’s authorized mass limit, according to the definition and figures in its documentation.
Reviewed 05.10.2026 · Version 2 · Scope: General
For practical use, check what the reference mass includes: the driver, fuel, equipment, and accessories may be treated differently depending on the specifications and applicable regulatory framework. Axle limits must also be respected.
Hypothetical example: if the maximum authorized mass is 3,500 kg and the actual mass before adding cargo is 3,000 kg, 500 kg remains up to that total limit. Axle limits remain relevant.
It is especially useful for work vehicles and recreational vehicles, where accessories, water, luggage, and passengers can considerably reduce the available margin.
The stated payload should not be applied without checking the actual configuration. Luggage-compartment volume and transportable mass are different quantities.
