Energy consumption

The amount of energy a vehicle uses to travel a distance or operate over a period, expressed relative to that distance or period.

Reviewed 05.10.2026 · Version 2 · Scope: General

How to interpret it

For electricity, it may be expressed in kWh per 100 km; for fuel, in liters per 100 km. The measurement needs to specify the measurement point and whether charging losses are included.

Example

If a hypothetical 200 km trip uses 30 kWh measured at the same reference point, the calculated average consumption is 15 kWh per 100 km.

Why it matters to you

It helps compare usage and estimate costs while keeping units, distance, and measurement reference consistent.

Common points of confusion

Consumption and range are related, but they are not the same quantity. Do not compare liters and kWh without explaining a conversion method.
