Torque

A quantity describing the turning action produced by an engine, usually expressed in newton-metres.

Reviewed 05.10.2026 · Version 3 · Scope: General

How to interpret it

A specification usually gives a value and the engine speed at which it is reached. Both details should be retained when comparing engines; the maximum figure alone does not describe their full behaviour.

Example

A hypothetical specification stating 250 Nm at 2,000 rpm gives a quantity and an operating condition, not the vehicle’s speed.

Why it matters to you

It makes it possible to read an engine characteristic precisely and distinguish it from power or from the force at the wheels.

Common points of confusion

Torque and power are related, but they are different quantities. The transmission changes the torque delivered to the wheels.
