Gearbox

A transmission assembly that makes it possible to use different ratios between the rotation of the engine and that of the driven wheels.

Reviewed 05.10.2026 · Version 3 · Scope: General

How to interpret it

The ratios adapt rotational speed and transmitted torque to different conditions. A manual, automatic, or dual-clutch gearbox has its own designation and specifications, which should be considered when comparing vehicles.

Example

In a conceptual example, two different gears allow the wheels to rotate at different speeds while the engine remains at the same speed.

Why it matters to you

It helps interpret vehicle versions and distinguish the type of transmission from its fuel-consumption or performance results.

Common points of confusion

The number of gears does not express quality by itself. The gearbox, clutch, and differential have different functions.
