Clutch

A component that connects and disconnects the transfer of motion between the engine and the gearbox.

Reviewed 05.10.2026 · Version 2 · Scope: General

How to interpret it

Its function makes it possible to engage or disengage parts of the transmission. Different configurations exist, so a general explanation is not a substitute for the documentation for the specific system.

Example

In a hypothetical manual transmission, disengaging the clutch temporarily separates the engine’s motion from the gearbox input.

Why it matters to you

It helps explain the function of a common component and distinguish a technical description from a fault diagnosis.

Common points of confusion

Not every automatic gearbox uses the same mechanism. A definition cannot diagnose wear or establish a repair procedure.
