Electronic stability control (ESC)

A system that compares the vehicle’s movement with the requested trajectory and intervenes to help restore stability.

Reviewed 05.10.2026 · Version 2 · Scope: General

How to interpret it

It may intervene in propulsion and brake individual wheels. Its sensors and strategies vary by vehicle; limits on grip still apply.

Example

In a conceptual example, a discrepancy between the requested steering direction and the vehicle’s actual movement may trigger automatic intervention on certain wheels.

Why it matters to you

It helps distinguish the stability function from other systems that only warn or act during braking.

Common points of confusion

ESP is a common commercial name for this function. It is not equivalent to autonomous driving and does not guarantee that every skid will be prevented.
