ABS

A system that regulates braking to reduce wheel lockup during braking.

Reviewed 05.10.2026 · Version 2 · Scope: General

How to interpret it

It uses information about wheel rotation to modulate braking. It is an assistance system with physical limits; it cannot make every surface provide good grip.

Example

In a hypothetical braking scenario, the system may modulate pressure when it detects a tendency for the wheels to lock; the result depends on the conditions.

Why it matters to you

It helps explain the function listed in a safety specification and what cannot be inferred from its presence alone.

Common points of confusion

ABS and stability control have different functions. ABS does not promise a fixed stopping distance on every surface.
