Automatic emergency braking

A function that may apply the brakes automatically when it detects a situation consistent with a likely collision.

Reviewed 05.10.2026 · Version 2 · Scope: General

How to interpret it

Its purpose is to reduce speed and, depending on the scenario, avoid or mitigate an impact. Check which obstacles, speeds, and conditions the specific system covers.

Example

In an imaginary test scenario, detecting an obstacle may activate braking; one result cannot be extrapolated to every obstacle or condition.

Why it matters to you

It helps interpret equipment and test results without treating an assistance feature as an absolute guarantee.

Common points of confusion

A collision warning is not the same as automatic intervention. It is also not equivalent to the warning lights activated by heavy braking.
