Braking distance

The distance a vehicle travels from the start of braking until it stops.

Reviewed 05.10.2026 · Version 2 · Scope: General

How to interpret it

It is distinct from the distance traveled during the driver’s reaction beforehand. To interpret a measurement, the speed, surface, tires, load, and test method must be kept in view.

Example

If a hypothetical example separates 15 meters of reaction distance and 30 meters of braking distance, the total stopping distance is 45 meters.

Why it matters to you

It helps interpret tests and understand why a figure obtained under certain conditions does not describe every situation.

Common points of confusion

Braking distance and stopping distance are not the same. A figure should not be presented without the speed and conditions.
