AC Charging

Charging in which the alternating-current supply is converted inside the vehicle to direct current to charge the battery.

Reviewed 05.10.2026 · Version 2 · Scope: General

How to interpret it

The onboard charger and the installation affect the power the vehicle can accept. The charging point’s rated power does not guarantee that the vehicle will use all of it; compatibility also matters.

Example

If a hypothetical charging point offers 22 kW and a vehicle accepts 11 kW on AC, advertising 22 kW does not show that the vehicle will charge at that power.

Why it matters to you

Makes it possible to check the relevant limit when comparing charging points and onboard charger specifications.

Common points of confusion

AC and DC describe types of current, not universal connectors. Do not apply the AC limit to DC charging.
