Wheelbase

Wheelbase is the longitudinal distance between a vehicle’s reference axles. In a two-axle car, it is measured between the front and rear axles.

Reviewed 05.10.2026 · Version 3 · Scope: General

How to interpret it

It is a design dimension that, together with many other factors, influences a vehicle’s space, proportions, and behavior. For vehicles with multiple axles, the specific distances shown must be identified.

Example

Hypothetical example: two cars can have the same overall length but different wheelbases if their overhangs differ. One measurement cannot be inferred from the other.

Why it matters to you

It helps compare proportions and interpret dimensional specifications, especially when assessing body styles or conversions.

Common points of confusion

It is not the width between the wheels on the same axle, which is called track, nor is it the vehicle’s overall length. A longer wheelbase does not by itself guarantee better passenger space.
