Towable mass

Towable mass is the mass limit for a trailer that a vehicle is authorized or technically capable of towing, according to the applicable documentation.

Reviewed 05.10.2026 · Version 2 · Scope: España

How to interpret it

Different values may apply to braked and unbraked trailers. The mass of the combination, the towing device, and the applicable authorization and driving conditions must also be checked.

Example

Hypothetical example: a vehicle’s specifications may list two different trailer limits depending on whether the trailer has brakes. Choosing only the higher figure without checking that condition would be an incomplete interpretation.

Why it matters to you

It helps identify vehicles suited to a towing requirement and read the manufacturer’s information together with its conditions.

Common points of confusion

It is not the towing vehicle’s payload. Nor does meeting a single limit guarantee that every combination complies with all applicable conditions.
