Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)

A vehicle that combines electric and combustion propulsion and allows its battery to be recharged from an external source.

Reviewed 05.10.2026 · Version 2 · Scope: General

How to interpret it

This architecture allows the vehicle to use stored electrical energy as well as fuel. Its behavior depends on the design, available charge, and operating conditions; consumption should be interpreted in light of the measurement method.

Example

In hypothetical use, comparing two trips with different initial charge levels does not make it possible to attribute the entire difference in consumption to the same factor.

Why it matters to you

Helps check both electric and fuel-use figures and understand the conditions associated with a published figure.

Common points of confusion

It is not the same as a non-plug-in hybrid and does not imply DC fast-charging capability. Compatibility must be checked for the specific version.
