Nominal interest rate

The nominal interest rate is the interest agreed for a loan over a period. In Spain, it is commonly identified by the acronym TIN.

Reviewed 05.10.2026 · Version 2 · Scope: España

How to interpret it

The TIN can be used to calculate interest under the contract, but by itself it does not include all costs that may accompany the financing. Fees, terms, payment frequency, and other applicable expenses should be reviewed.

Example

Hypothetical example: two loans advertise the same TIN, but one charges an arrangement fee. Sharing that percentage does not mean they have the same effective cost.

Why it matters to you

It helps explain the part of a financing cost attributable to interest. To compare offers, it should be read alongside the TAE and the total amount owed.

Common points of confusion

TIN and TAE are not synonyms. Nor should an explanation of Spanish regulations automatically be applied to contracts in another country.
