Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV)

A hybrid system in which the electric component assists the combustion engine without independently providing electric propulsion for the vehicle.

Reviewed 05.10.2026 · Version 2 · Scope: General

How to interpret it

Assistance and energy recovery are part of its architecture. The term does not imply an electric range equivalent to that of a BEV or a plug-in hybrid.

Example

A hypothetical version advertised as a mild hybrid should not be compared as if it offered the same electric journeys as a PHEV.

Why it matters to you

Helps distinguish types of electrification and check the actual scope of a commercial designation.

Common points of confusion

It is not synonymous with a full hybrid or a plug-in hybrid. A particular voltage alone does not establish the full architecture either.
