All-wheel drive

A configuration in which the powertrain can transmit motion to the wheels on both axles.

Reviewed 05.10.2026 · Version 2 · Scope: General

How to interpret it

It may operate continuously or engage an axle depending on the conditions and design. The general term should be checked against the documentation for the system installed in the specific version.

Example

Two imaginary vehicles advertised as having all-wheel drive could use different architectures; the shared label does not prove that they have identical torque distribution.

Why it matters to you

It helps verify which version is being compared and which transmission functions are actually documented.

Common points of confusion

The commercial use of AWD and 4WD varies. All-wheel drive does not guarantee a low-range transfer case, differential locks, or off-road capability.
