Rolling resistance

The force that opposes a tire’s motion as it rolls; it can also be described as the force needed to move it.

Reviewed 07.10.2026 · Version 2 · Scope: España

How to interpret it

The term refers specifically to the resistance associated with a tire rolling. By itself, it does not describe every force that can hinder a vehicle’s motion.

Example

Hypothetical example: when pushing a car with its tires rolling, rolling resistance is one of the forces opposing its forward motion.

Why it matters to you

It provides a term for identifying and analyzing the force that must be overcome for a tire to move while rolling.

Common points of confusion

It is not synonymous with every kind of resistance to a vehicle’s motion: the term focuses on the tire rolling. Nor does it, by itself, express an overall measure of all the forces acting on the car.
