Boat displacement
Displacement is the mass of water displaced by a floating boat, and is equal to the boat’s mass in that condition.

How to interpret it
It is specified for a particular state, such as unloaded or carrying a stated load. Fuel, water, people, and equipment change the total mass and therefore the displacement.
Example
Hypothetical example: adding 200 kg of load to a floating boat increases its mass and displacement by that amount. The effect on draft depends on the hull’s geometry.
Why it matters to you
It helps interpret nautical specifications and distinguish a boat’s geometric size from its actual or stated mass.
Common points of confusion
It is neither the boat’s cargo volume nor its passenger capacity. The word also has other meanings, so nautical context is needed.
