Regenerative braking: what energy it recovers and how it works
What energy regenerative braking transforms, how it is stored in the battery, and what the examples from Porsche and Dacia show.
Key points
Regenerative braking converts the vehicle's kinetic energy into electricity during deceleration. This article explains the principle and compares the specific descriptions provided by Porsche and Dacia.
The key idea: recovering energy and storing it in the battery
The DGT explains that during braking, the system transforms kinetic and inertial energy into electricity and stores it in the battery. Hyundai adds that this energy can be used later: conversion and storage are stages of the process.
Thus, 'recovering' describes a sequence: energy is transformed during braking, stored in the battery, and can be used afterwards. It is not the same as feeling the car hold back when decelerating.

Two examples of operation
In the system described by Porsche, the rotation of the wheels drives the system, produces current, and this is stored in the battery. Dacia, for its part, notes that, with regenerative braking activated in the described system, lifting the foot off the accelerator produces engine braking.

What these examples allow to compare
Porsche describes the production and storage of current linked to wheel rotation; Dacia describes engine braking when lifting the accelerator with its system activated. These are distinct aspects: feeling engine braking does not allow knowing how much energy returns to the battery or establishing which system stores more. The amount of recovered energy varies between cars. To compare it, comparable data on the amount stored would be needed.
